Fairmont had a unique problem. Ships at sea
needed to get quotes for supplies and send purchase orders to land based
suppliers. These suppliers all had B2B services in place but how to use them
without an internet connection. The solution? XML. Working with Fairmont,
ChromaSoft used Microsoft Excel as the application interface to produce the
necessary POs and RFQs. When an RFQ was ready, the application repackaged it
as an XML document for attachment to an email message that could be sent by
satellite to the head office server. The server would then resend the XML to
the various suppliers then back to the ship. The completed XML RFQ would
then be loaded back into Excel for review, printing and editing.
Technologies used:
- Microsoft Excel automation.
- XML parsing.
- Business to Business internet concepts.
